Grounded in the American improvisational tradition, the ensemble embraces music forms, languages, instrumentation, and cosmologies of Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the African diaspora. Decades of performance and research into these music cultures have given the artists the background and experience to create a unique and unprecedented improvisational art form."

Adam Rudolph's Moving Pictures was formed in 1991 and has performed in both Europe and the United States. In addition, each member has concertized extensively throughout North and South America, Europe, Japan, Africa, and Australia. Their collective background spans an wide range of musical experiences, including performances with world music ensembles, 20th century chamber groups and leading artists in the jazz and rhythm & blues fields. The concert repertoire consists of original compositions by Mr. Rudolph which serve as a basis for improvisational dialogue. The performance aesthetic of the ensemble reflects an ongoing search for new sounds and creative processes through which the players can express their thoughts and emotions.



QUARTET BIOGRAPHIES

Special guest: Innovative Butoh dancer OGURI began to create dance at a young age, later delving into the darkness of Butoh. In 1984 he began his studies with Tatsumi Hijikata the founder of Butoh. In 1985 he joined Body Weather Laboratory (BWL) and Min Tanaka's "Mai­Juku". For six years, he lived as a farmer on the company's traditional rice farm in Japan and was noted for his solo work which he presented monthly in Tokyo. Since 1991 he has toured worldwide with his solo work or in collaboration with Roxanne Steinberg and other members of his troupe "Renzoku" and BWL International.


Percussionist
HAMID DRAKE is a musician who is equally beloved for the creativity and skill he brings to both the "jazzdrum set" and a variety of hand drums including tabla, congas, djembe and frame drums. He has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, Africa and Japan since the mid ­ seventies. He is particularly known for his work with Don Cherry in both the Nu Now and Multi Kulti groups during the 1980's and 90's. He has performed and recorded with many of today's outstanding artists in improvisational and world musics, including: Pharoah Sanders, Foday Musa Suso, William Parker, David Murray, Dewey Redman, Hassan Hakmoun, Jim Pepper, Pierre Dorge, Michael Rose, Marylin Crispell, Peter Brotzman and A.A.C.M. co-founder Fred Anderson. He has recorded for the Verve, Polydor, FMP, Nessa, Europa, Flying Fish, and Steeplechase labels. Hamid leads his own ensemble "Bindu".


Woodwind player
RALPH JONES has been active as an artist in the African-American improvisational tradition for over 25 years performing on During that time, he has toured throughout the United States and Europe with Pharoah Sanders, Ahmed­Abdul Malik, Yusef Lateef, Ella Fitzgerald, Leo Smith, and Ken Cox. He was a featured soloist with the Cologne Radio Orchestra in the world premiere of Yusef Lateef's African American Epic Suite. Mr. Jones studied the hichiriki with Japanese Gagaku master Togi, is a founding member of Eternal Wind, and has recorded for the Columbia, Island, Flying Fish, and Capitol record labels. His most recent release is "Yusef Lateef & Ralph M. Jones III: Woodwinds" on YAL records.

The members of Adam Rudolph's Moving Pictures are experienced and dedicated educators. They welcome the opportunity to present educational workshops and residencies for students, adults and children - geared to the level of musical knowledge of each audience. "THE ART OF IMPROVISATION"

The Ensemble explores how to utilize fundamental music and movement elements: of form, melody, rhythm, harmony & timbre to create new musical languages.

"A WORKSHOP FOR COMPOSERS: CREATING CONTEXTUAL COMPOSITIONS FOR IMPROVISATION"

This workshop outlines the methods by which composers may create compositional frameworks through which performers may interact improvisationally.

"CYCLIC VERTICALISM: AN APPROACH TO UNDERSTANDING WORLD MUSIC THROUGH RHYTHM"

Presented by ensemble Artistic Director, Adam Rudolph, and drummer Hamid Drake, this discussion leads audiences through the complexities and simplicities of rhythmic structures common to all musics, and explores re-combinations of them as they inform the musical language of the ensemble.

"IMPROVISATIONAL TECHNIQUES AND APPROACHES FOR WIND PLAYERS"

Extended techniques, cyclic breathing and melodic systems for the woodwind player.


"RAGA AND TALA"

Steve Gorn presents and introduction to North Indian classical music and creative applications of the sounds and concepts for musicians of all levels and instruments.


“MUSIC OF THE MAGREB”

Presented by Brahim Fribgane, this workshop is a hands on introduction to music and rhythms of Berber and Gnawa peoples of Morocco.


“HARMOLOICS AND THE GUITAR”

Presented by Kenny Wessel, this workshop is a hands on introduction to the concepts of Ornette Coleman particularly as it applies to guitar and other pictched instruments.


"FOR STRING PLAYERS"

Working on taking small musical ideas and shapes and employing those to build solos.
• Repertoire Development - Strategies to learn and memorize tunes, and how to build a jazz repertoire.
• Chord Melody - How to develop chord melodies on the guitar and bass

"WHAT ARE THESE INSTRUMENTS AND WHERE DO THEY
COME FROM?"

Moving Pictures performs on a wide variety of the world's instruments, many of which areunfamiliar to music audiences. These include the didjeridoo, hichiriki, djembe, bendir,dumbek, shenai, kaval, bata, kalimba, shakuhachi, tarija, sintir, udu drums, tablas, talking drums, ney, and tar. Additionally, the ensemble utilizes sound makers generally found in settings other than professional music making, such as bird whistles, toys, and "found" objects. This lecture/demonstration introduces these instruments, explains their origins and use within the ensemble, and includes some "hands-on" experimentation for audiences of all ages.



Presenters may request combinations of any of the above sessions, and/or customized presentations for a variety of audiences.
